Photo of the day 2.8.10

Portraiture remains my favourite form of photography, and something in this image shared by borderfilms(Doug) really spoke to me. It could be the beckoning expression of the woman, Mary, who owns the shop, or the curious face of the little boy in the back -- or it could just be that this shop looks like the many I used to visit in my homeland of Trinidad. It's a great reminder that wherever we go, there's always something familiar. Great image.

I admit it: I'm a sucker for a great shot from the flight deck. And this image, captured by Fly for Fun (otherwise known as our very own Kent Wien) is a beaut -- I love the saturated colours and compelling lighting, shot as the flight was descending into Boston. Well done, Captain!

Sometimes, the most fulfilling adventure you can have when traveling is trying the local cuisine, as exemplified by this photograph entitled "Street Food is the Best Food," shot and shared by Bernard-SD. This is food photography at its finest, folks: beautifully lit, with lots of saturated colour and impeccable detail. Well done!

Sometimes what makes a photo isn't the subject or the composition, but the treatment of the image -- the processing -- after the photographer captures the images. And this lovely vintage treatment of the Hotel de Ville in Brussels by photographer Malou Arevalo is a great example -- the result is a completely timeless shot. Beautiful work.

I love when a photographer uses lines and texture to compose his shot, and this photograph shared by arex is a beautiful example of how to make this work. Notice the differing textures between the rocky beach and the water of the ocean (not to mention the cloudless sky), and how the beachline and the horizon converge ... so well done.

As we come to the close of 2009, it's time to start dreaming about far-off lands to visit in the coming year. And I have to say, this great shot of Venice homes shared by tysonwilliams.com provides the perfect inspiration.

Come on: you didn't think I could let "Snopocalypse" or "#snOMG!" or the Nor'easter Known by So Many Names get by without featuring it here on Gadling, did you? Luckily for us, Cazimiro shared this beautiful image of the amazing snowfall that pummeled the east coast of the United States this past weekend in our Gadling Flickr pool. Talk about walkin' in a winter wonderland.

This year, I'm feeling just full of the holiday spirit, so in looking for tonight's Photo of the Day, I decided to base my search on holiday phrases. While this beautiful photograph, entitled "blue december" and shared by kanelstrand isn't exactly what I had in mind, you can certainly see why I was drawn to this image with its strong lines and vivid colours. A really arresting shot.

This beautiful shot shared by Code N in the Gadling Flickr pool is a masterful example of showing how a photographer can maximize and manipulate the light to the utmost advantage. Code N has perfectly exposed all the streetlights, the sunset in the background, and the reflections in the water in Shanghai to stunning effect. Beautifully done.

It's been a day full of adventure here on Gadling, so it only seems appropriate to feature this beautiful shot shared by localsurfer in our Gadling Flickr pool. As a SCUBA diver, I consider the ocean my last frontier ... so I think I have a pretty good idea of what this surfer must be feeling as he contemplates the waves in Tanzania.
