Nov 12th, 2009 at 12:00PM: No matter who you are or how fancy your hotel is, inviting strangers to your room is a risky business. Just ask Robert J. Anello, a New York Lawyer who was staying at the lovely Ritz-Carlton, San Juan in Puerto Rico's posh Isla Verde district (shown). He was tied up in his room with lamp cords and a necktie just before dawn on Monday, and had $800 cash and his two cell phones stolen.

Nov 8th, 2009 at 6:00PM:
Anyone looking for a taste Caribbean colonial charm should head for Puerto Rico's Old San Juan. It's an area with loads of atmosphere - brightly colored pastel mansions, cobblestone streets, and a surprising street art scene. I particularly liked the bold colors and gritty charm of this photo in Old San Juan by Flickr user robertrexdotcom. It reminded me of my visit last year, wandering the ...

Sep 16th, 2009 at 10:00AM: 22 people were arrested Tuesday amidst allegations of smuggling drugs from Puerto Rico into the US on American Airlines planes. Nine of the people arrested were employees of the airline, who allegedly sent over 9,000 kilograms - almost 20,000 pounds - of cocaine to US destinations that included Miami, Orlando and New Jersey. According to the US Justice Department, the ring has been operating since ...

Sep 7th, 2009 at 7:00PM: It's Labor Day in the US (and Labour Day in Canada), which is sort of the unofficial end of summer, and the unofficial start of autumn. And so, in honour of this day, I couldn't help but share this vibrant shot shared by robertrex365 in the Gadling flickr pool -- it just seems to capture the mood of the waning season. Well done. If you've got some great travel shots you'd love to share, be sure ...

Jul 13th, 2009 at 3:00PM: Hilton's trying to make it as easy as possible for you to soak up the sun this summer. Its new deal in Puerto Rico will set you up with a free fourth night if you pay for three. Even better: the three nights that will cost you only start at $139 each. All in, you're saving up to $400 a trip. Resort credits are offered for golf, dining, spa treatments and other activities.
And, it keeps getting ...

Jun 17th, 2009 at 9:00AM: Fort San Cristóbal, as I mentioned in my article "Old San Juan - Beautiful Views and What to Do," is a must-see on any trip to Old San Juan. Even if you think history is kind of a yawner, the views will astound you -- just the color of the stone is visually luscious enough to charm you. And since we're on the topic, here's a quick history lesson for you. I'll try to make it fun. ...

Mar 10th, 2009 at 1:30PM: What's a traveler to do? You return from Puerto Rico, and have no choice but to store away the memories along with the suitcase, right? Not necessarily. The better solution: bring Puerto Rico back with you and incorporate her favorite qualities into your daily life. 1. Coffee: As a member of the tropical island club, Puerto Rico produces some fine coffee. And in Old San Juan, the best comes from ...

Jan 17th, 2009 at 8:30AM: USAToday has put together an interesting list of 10 great international places to go for a value on your vacation. These places were specifically picked to allow us to get more bang for our buck when traveling abroad this year, something that seems to be on every traveler's mind at the moment. The list of locations really does span the globe, and there is something for everyone on the list. Want ...

Jan 16th, 2009 at 7:30PM: First, where ever you are, I hope you're toasty warm. Man, is it cold in Ohio!
Hopefully, you've been inspired to travel by our budget travel series this month. There are two more weeks to go. Thanks to Jeremy's post, I've hooked into the idea of checking out Puerto Rico, a place I haven't been. In regards to those cities where I have traveled, I have a stash of new ideas.
For more budget ...

Jan 14th, 2009 at 11:30AM: Summary: One of the frequent knocks on the Caribbean is that many of the islands (not all) are nothing more than receptacles for tourists. That there's no real dynamic culture and sense of place. But this statement also ignores the fact that millions of Americans head to the Caribbean each year, and many of them are looking for nothing more than a cheap vacation with a beautiful beach and a ...

Jan 12th, 2009 at 10:00AM:
Back in February, I attended a wedding in Puerto Rico. Staying at a hotel in Carolina, I found myself a few blocks away from Club Gallistico de Puerto Rico, one of the larger cockfighting arenas on the island. Not one to pass up the opportunity to experience a local sporting event (I've witnessed street kids in Barcelona playing baseball and joined a pickup cricket game in India), I rallied some ...

Jan 8th, 2009 at 10:30AM: I just got back from spending a week visiting a friend in Puerto Rico. Considering I am tan, well-rested and had perfect weather, I guess it was a successful trip. But it was almost derailed from the very beginning when US Airways lost my luggage.
You see, I was forced to check my luggage because the overhead compartments were full. When I asked the US Airways representative why people in our ...

Dec 26th, 2008 at 5:00PM: I've long been a fan of spiced 'nog. It's one of the creamiest, best tastes in the world. For over 300 years, eggnog has been a Christmas staple, and I just had to get to the bottom of the mystery of 'why'? What I discovered in my research of the origin of eggnog was quite startling. While 'nog definitely came from Europe circa early 17th century, the term "eggnog" and the etymology of the word is ...

Apr 19th, 2008 at 11:00PM: Vacationing in any foreign place takes a little bit of acclimating to get used to the bar scene. You have to know the right bars and locations to go to avoid being labeled as a tourist or getting ripped off. For example, my friend Ered always loves going to "Wine Bars" when we're in foreign countries -- but if something has WINE BAR written in English on the front facade, it's catering to ...

Apr 15th, 2008 at 9:20AM: This past weekend I had an opportunity to experience the many pleasures of Puerto Rico's Old San Juan neighborhood. Ringed by massive stone walls and the imposing El Morro fortress, the historic heart of this former Spanish colonial capital provides a virtual feast for the senses. As I meandered the area's narrow cobblestone streets, I passed by block after block of majestic, pastel-colored ...

Apr 3rd, 2008 at 4:00PM: I've been putting off sending an alert about this fare for the past few days because it wasn't really excellent enough -- but today it got excellent. Earlier prices from Los Angeles and San Francisco to San Juan, Puerto Rico, were about 275-300$ for dates in April and May, which, even though is a pretty competitive price, isn't fall-off-your-chair outstanding. Today however, I'm picking up prices ...

Sep 11th, 2007 at 5:00PM: Lately, I've been thinking I ought to go on a cruise. Geek Cruises perked up my interest. So did finding out I could get credit to renew teaching certification on another. Here's the cruise of cruises--possibly the right combination of reasons to take in some luxury, see the world and have a wonderful time being entertained by the best.
Regent Cruises has an intriguing option for taking a ...

Aug 6th, 2007 at 1:21PM: I spent a long weekend diving and cavorting around Vieques Island off of Puerto Rico a few months ago, and I was very pleased with the experience. I particularly enjoyed swimming at night and paddling in the Bio Bay Reserve there, a small inlet wherein swim gazzillions of luminescent plankton that seem to magically light up around you when you swim in the water. But one thing I noticed about ...

Jul 20th, 2007 at 11:40AM: Puerto Rico celebrates two people in July. There was Muñoz Rivera Day on July 17 in honor of Luis Muñoz Rivera (1859-1916) who was a patriot and a journalist. And on his birthday on July 27, José Celso Barbosa is honored on Barbosa Day. Barbosa was a physician, political leader and a sociologist who was instrumental in starting Puerto Rico's health insurance system.
Both ...

Mar 16th, 2007 at 11:56PM: Are you ready for another fantastic Gadling recap of a week that was, um quite fantastic? I reckon so, but before I dig in I must say there were several other highlights to this week not listed here like how to speed through security check points or some new outdoor places in China to use the potty (only for those who aren't shy) which were recently blogged about, but let's go back further in the ...
